Darwin City Index.

Darwin City has a significant historical and cultural background depicted by its key attractions. Lined with green parklands, Darwin City provides visitors with a comfortable, relaxing and entertaining place to visit more than once. A stroll around Darwin City gives you a fascinating insight into the history behind what has made Darwin City the place you see today.
Following a Stuart`s successful crossing from south to north in 1862, a settlement was established in 1864. In 1869 the present city was surveyed and laid out by George Woodruffe Goyder. Goyders street grid remains, essentially the same today which lies a rich mix of Darwin`s heritage. From the Historic buildings of Brownsmart to the architecturally significant Government House there is a fine range of historic buildings. In August 1994 the new Parliament House opened and with the continuing development of State Square it is now an established an important civic heart in the city centre.
