Pine Creek area Index.

The town of Pine Creek is located 90kms north of Katherine at the junction of the Stuart and Kakadu Highways. Overland Telegraph Line construction worker named Pine Creek in 1870. Herbert noted “ This creek was by no means large but was remarkable for the pines growing there ”. During the contruction of the Overland Telegraph Line posthole diggers discovered traces of gold and this lead to the goldrush of 1871.

Pine Creek become a busy little mining town, around 1885 there was about 200 Europeans and 4000 chinese working the goldfields.
Today Pine Creek is a small friendly place that has everything from food to fuel to accomadation to cater for the visitor`s needs.
Local attractions includes a collection of historic buildings and sites from the mining days, gorges, swimming holes and there is also an oppertunity to try your hand at gold panning or see the restored and operating steam engine in action. Pine creek plays host throughout the year with annual events such as the Goldrush Festival, NT Gold Panning Championships, Pine Creek races as well.
