Nourlangie
Rock Index.
An ancient Aboriginal shelter
and outstanding Aboriginal rock art are found at the base of this
large sandstone outlier. An area of great archaeological significance
and Aboriginal rock art, Nourlangie host two magnificent Aboriginal
rock art galleries. Anbangbang Galleries is just a short walk from
the car park on the southern side whilst Nanguluwur Gallery, on
the northern side, is a 2km walk from the gravel road. There are
two excellent lookouts provided. Gunwarddehwardde Lookout is just
a short climb from the Anbangbang Gallery and provides outstanding
views of Nourlangie and the rugged Arnhem Land Escarpment to the
south.
Just west of Nourlangie, Nawurlandja Lookout provides outstanding
views of Nourlangie Rock, Anbangbang Billabong and the floodplains
to the north. A12km walk around the base of Nourlangie provides
a further appreciation of this massive outcrop whilst an easy one
hour walk around the adjacent Anbangbang Billabong provides an intimate
look at the plant and birdlife of a tropical billabong.
