The multicultural aspect of Darwin is considered
by many to be one of its greatest attractions. Darwin has some
76 ethnic groups listed, the largest being the Greek community.
The Chinese, Italian, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Filipino
and Timorese / Portuguese also have a strong presence and in all
there are over 50 ethnic organization.
Much of the richness of Darwin comes from its many
cultures which provide
numerous annual celebrations such as:
- The Italian community stages Pasta in the Park,
- The German community provides a great Beerfest,
- Chinese New Year is celebrated in great style in Darwin
as do the Vietnamese community,
- Maoris host hungis,
- Filipinos celebrate their National Day, as do the Portuguese
/ Timorese.
- The Sri Lankans celebrate their New Year in April, and the
- Greek Glenti is a marvellous day of Greek song, food and
dance in June,
- Australia day Jan 26 is a traditional Australian National
celebration.
