Darwin is often described as a young - mans
town because of its high proportion of young adults and
children.. This is because of work available at the mines and
also the Defence Force build up.
Indeed, the average age for Darwin is just 29 years,
as of September 2001, with the national median age being 35.2
years (ABS).
As of September 2001 the estimated resident population
of Darwin and nearby Palmerston was just over 198.0 (ABS). The
suburb of Palmerston is about 18km south of Darwin and is growing
at a rapid rate.
Palmerston is expanding as the defence force is moving more of
their troops here. The Army barracks alone has grown considerably
over the last few years.
